U.K. dentists say more is needed to correct unprecedented pay cut of 40%
The British Dental Association (BDA) has said a above-inflation 6% pay increase for high street NHS dentists is welcome but warns that contract reform is quickly needed to keep the service afloat. Since 2008/9, the typical dentist in England has seen real cuts in pay of over 40%, according to recent BDA analysis of data on NHS dentists' earnings and expenses. Shawn Charlwood, Chair of the BDA's General Dental Practice Committee, said the the above-inflation award is "welcome progress, but one above-inflation increase will not correct a decade of savage pay cuts with no equal." Referencing a BDA warning that high street dentists have been voting with their feet by reducing or ending their NHS commitment, Charlwood said: "High street dentists have not taken industrial action. They are simply walking away. We won't halt this exodus without real contract reform and fair, sustained funding."Read more
